چکیده

A gamma-ray halo in a nearby starburst galaxy NGC 253 was found by the CANGAROO-II Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescope (IACT). By fitting the energy spectrum with expected curves from Cold Dark Matter (CDM) annihilations, we constrain the CDM-annihilation rate in the halo of NGC 253. Upper limits for the CDM density were obtained in the wide mass range between 0.5 and 50 TeV. Although these limits are higher than the expected values, it is complementary important to the other experimental techniques, especially considering the energy coverage. We also investigate the next astronomical targets to improve these limits. Subject headings: galaxy: individual (NGC 253)— gamma rays: theory — dark matter

Gamma-Ray Constraints on Neutralino Dark Matter Clumps in the Galactic Halo

According to high resolution cold dark matter (CDM) simulations, large virialized halos are formed through the constant merging of smaller halos formed at earlier times. In particular, the halo of our Galaxy may have hundreds of dark matter clumps. The annihilation of dark matter particles such as the neutralino in these clumps generates γ-ray fluxes that can potentially be detected by future e...

Recently, the CANGAROO-II telescope detected diffuse TeV gamma-ray emission from a nearby edge-on starburst galaxy, NGC 253. The emission mechanism is discussed in this report. We review the emissions of radio-to-TeV gamma-rays from NGC 253, and present a model of the non-thermal emissions due to synchrotron radiations and inverse Compton scatterings. A halo model successfully explains the mult...

Gamma Ray Astronomy and Baryonic Dark Matter

Recently, Dixon et al. (1998) have re-analyzed the EGRET data, finding a statistically significant diffuse γ-ray emission from the galactic halo. We show that this emission can naturally be explained within a previously-proposed model for baryonic dark matter, in which γ-rays are produced through the interaction of high-energy cosmic-ray protons with cold H2 clouds clumped into dark clusters th...

Constraints on Cold H I in the Halo of NGC 3079 from Absorption Measurements of Q 0957 + 561

We perform the first observational test of dark matter in the form of cold (3 K) fractal clouds, as described by Pfenniger et al. (1994) and Pfenniger & Combes (1994). This is accomplished by probing for HI absorption in the halo of NGC 3079 against the background quasar, Q 0957+561, which is separated from the centre of NGC 3079 by 64 kpc, in projection. No absorption is detected to a limit of...

On the Spiral Structure of NGC 2915 and Dark Matter

NGC 2915 is a blue compact dwarf galaxy embedded in an extended, low surface brightness H I disk exhibiting a two-armed spiral structure and a central bar-like component. Commonly accepted mechanisms are unable to explain the existence of these patterns and Bureau et al. proposed disk dark matter (scaling with the H I distribution) or a rotating triaxial dark halo as alternative solutions. In a...
